All creators reach a stage in their development when their work is honed to such a point that, within the right environment, it would fulfil the hopes and aspirations that the creator had during it’s creation…
if only there were an accessible outlet through which to showcase it!
My hope for The Jigsaw is that it will be that showcase – for passionate comic creators who have reached that stage – and are looking for an adequate platform to present from.
The project came about through requests from others – for me to look at the feasibility of producing a publication that fits the bill… so this is very much early days and ‘uncharted territory’.
What it isn’t:
The Jigsaw will not be a book in which to show your developing work…
There are many publications cropping up at the minute through which to try out your work until it reaches a level of technique, style and control that shows your voice for who you are… what I’m after is the fully formed you, and the work that reflects you at the very top of that form.
So please be realistic when deciding to submit your work – I am very short on time to dedicate to the project, and as such I will have to edit pretty harshly for the benefit of all!
Remember – poor work does not represent you in a good light!
And definitely… leave your egos at the door (don’t tell me you haven’t got one – I’m an artist as well!)
What it is:
The Jigsaw will be a showcase for small press artists at the top of their game who are now in need of a well curated/edited publication filled with the work of other creators at a similar level.
A quality anthology that will reflect collectively the highest standards of creators in the self-publishing arena.
So why me?:
I assume that I’ve been approached to look at the potential for The Jigsaw because:
- I’m a long time comic amateur with a good grasp of the fundamentals of comic art and design.
- I have experience with pulling together my own strips, and self publishing professional quality books on a shoestring budget.
3. I am in that same, fully formed (but frustrated by lack of avenue) group of creators that I’m looking for here!
So why is The Jigsaw any different from other anthologies?:
There are quite a number of publications out there at the moment taking advantage of the poor structure of the comics industry – and ‘using’ artists and writers in undesirable ways.
There are far more creators than ‘publishers’ out there at the moment who, with a community driven approach, could achieve just as much , if not more, without any involvement from anyone else… cutting out middlemen who are not necessarily as passionate about comics as are those who produce them!
Being invested as a creator looking for that next important step myself… and having a complete understanding of the issues involved from a personal point of view… are the biggest differences in how I will approach what happens with this book… I’ll treat everyone’s work and interests with the level of respect I would expect for my own!
So, if you think you have reached the level outlined above (and again, please be honest with yourselves!)… and think you can contribute to a book that will promote yourself and those appearing in it with you in the best of lights… read the submission spec below and send me two pages!
