KENDAL 2015

So, back down to Kendal in the morning for the third Lakes Comic Art Festival.
No table this time.
Going to soak in the atmosphere and drift the tables of, what promises to be, a mighty entourage this year.
It’s hard to believe that it’s only been two years since I shared a coffee with the legendary Jose Munoz, supped a Guinness with the equally legendary David Lloyd, met the mighty wordsmith Kermit Leveridge… and so much has passed since then that I feel pretty blessed all round!
I’ve produced a couple of short strips for UK anthology books, created record covers, contributed a double page spread for Igor Goldkind’s revolutionary Is She Available (alongside the likes of Bill Scienkiewicz, David Lloyd, Liam Sharp, Rian Hughes, Glenn Fabry etc.), launched my own Bulletproof Nylon on an unsuspecting world, drawn illustrations for American pulp publishing houses and produced near seventy pages of comic art for David Lloyds Aces Weekly.
Aye… blessed all round!
These two years have been both a testing ground and a period of bringing into focus exactly what I want to do creatively, and what directions those endeavours will move in.
Bulletproof Nylon will begin, properly, with the first novel in January 2016, with another five books to follow, charting the main characters development into areas I hadn’t even conceived of two years ago.
Sequential art wise; once the latest tale is told for David’s Aces Weekly (starting November 9th), I’ll be pulling together my own story WELKIN, for self publishing somewhere mid next year.
On top of that, I’ll be returning to Lies and Other Fools for Kermit in February. A vacant space that needs to be made whole!
I only hope the next two years will be as rewarding as the last two!

IS SHE AVAILABLE…

Well, last weekend was a bit of a mind blower.
Not only did I stretch myself into producing something quicker than seemed possible…
Not only did I have the honour of making the acquaintance of a couple of true legends…
Not only did I make something that I’m proud to say will appear in a publication, next to some of the worlds finest artists, mid next year…
But I had the opportunity to educate myself on David Halliwell. An unsung hero of modern theatre, whose contribution has for far too long been unrecognised.
But more on Halliwell soon.
Here’s the base image for Igor Goldkinds, DAEDALUS AFRAID TO FLY; his eulogy/poem to Halliwell, read to a gathering including John Hurt, Harold Pinter and David Warner at Halliwells funeral in 2006.
The illustrated poem will be part of Goldkinds book/motion comic/web presentation throughout 2015 – IS SHE AVAILABLE.
The future? You decide.

The Orb

Revelations come in the strangest of ways.
I’ve written before of how, to some degree, comics can be a form of catharsis when addressing issues in ones life, whether directly or indirectly.
SCARS falls into the latter category and, as an allegorical reflection on something that I will admit, caused great confusion, and changes of opinion on the value that I previously put on family, has helped me immensely.
The revelatory part came this afternoon, when I noticed that a recurrent symbol had suddenly reappeared – but in a context that seemed out of place with its previous occurrences… I realised quickly, it was in exactly the right place.
The orb is fundamental to the whole of the SCARS saga, and I realised this afternoon why.
If you choose to follow SCARS On Aces Weekly, I can promise you the closest thing to a slice of my psyche thing that I can muster.

WELKIN…

Right…

For those who have asked, BULLHAWK’s next adventure will be ready for a Christmas release…

The SONG OF THE SOMME story will tell the background tale of Owen and Georges early years and how, through the tragedies of the Western Front, they came to be who they are.

The story for ACES Volume 12 on August the 25th is WELKIN.

By far the most personal story I have ever conceived, and something unlike anything I have ever produced before.

Told entirely in a woodcut style, WELKIN is an exploration of what it is to be human when the flesh of life has gone.

August 25th…

Aces High…

There’ll be a change of plan shortly.

BULLHAWKS triumphant return to Aces will need to be postponed for a short while…

However – the date remains the same… Only the tale has changed…

more shortly…
